The Reflections Series started with something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. The idea of identity. We only see ourselves in reflection. We never see ourselves as others see us. What we think of as our true image is reversed in a mirror or in a photo. When we see ourselves in a photo that someone else has taken we don’t think it looks like us because that’s not the face we see in the mirror. Even a portrait is our image seen through the eyes of the artist. It’s that moment when we see ourselves reflected in a shop window we don’t recognise ourselves for a moment.
This series plays with the layers of reflections we see every day. We can read them because we are familiar with them, but this is a recent cultural notion. Before the invention of good clear mirrors and photography people didn’t have a clear idea of what they looked like, reflective surfaces like water and glass are transitory, the images are fleeting, translated too canvas however they become are fixed and constant.
